Why an LED light bar is not always the best choice for your vehicle

More light does not automatically mean better visibility

When looking for additional lighting for a vehicle or machine, a LED light bar is often the first option that comes to mind. LED light bars are known for their high light output and impressive beam distance. For use on the road or in open terrain, they can be an excellent solution.

However, a LED light bar is not the right choice for every vehicle. In sectors such as earthmoving, agriculture, off-road operations and recovery services, it is often assumed that more light automatically results in better visibility. In practice, the beam pattern is at least as important as the amount of light produced. For machines such as excavators, wheel loaders and other work vehicles, a LED light bar is often not the most effective solution.

What is a LED light bar designed for?

A LED light bar is designed to project light over long distances. Depending on the model, the beam can reach from several dozen to hundreds of metres. This makes a LED light bar particularly suitable for trucks that frequently operate at night, off-road vehicles, 4x4s and vehicles working in open areas with long sightlines. The purpose of a LED light bar is to provide visibility far ahead, allowing obstacles, bends and changes in terrain to be detected in time.

The challenge with work machines

For an excavator, the working area is usually located directly in front of or beside the machine. The operator needs a clear view of the excavator bucket, trenches and pits, pipe connections, workers around the machine, and the materials being moved.

A LED light bar often provides insufficient illumination for these areas because it is primarily designed to project light over long distances. As a result, there may be plenty of light visible in the distance while the immediate working area remains relatively dark.

This creates a situation where there is technically a large amount of light available, but not where it is actually needed.

Why work lights are often a better solution

For machines that operate at close range, LED work lights are usually far more effective. These lights are designed with a wide beam pattern that provides uniform illumination across the working area.

Benefits of high-quality LED work lights:

  • Light exactly where the work is being carried out
  • Reduced shadow formation
  • Better visibility of tools and materials
  • More efficient working in the dark

By strategically positioning multiple work lights around the machine, a fully illuminated working area can be created without dark spots or blind corners.

The right beam pattern makes all the difference

When choosing work lighting, people often focus on the number of lumens. While light output is important, the beam pattern ultimately determines how useful the light is.

In general, there are three commonly used beam patterns:

Spot
A spot beam projects light over long distances and concentrates it into a narrow beam. This principle is commonly used in LED light bars and driving lights.

Flood
A flood beam spreads light widely across a larger area. This type of beam is ideal for work machines.

Combination beam
Some lights combine spot and flood beam patterns, providing both long-range visibility and wide-area illumination.

For an excavator or wheel loader, a flood beam or combination beam will usually deliver better results than a LED light bar focused primarily on long-range illumination.

Which lighting is suitable for an excavator?

For most excavators, an effective lighting setup consists of:
Work lights mounted at the front of the cab.
Work lights mounted at the rear.
Lighting mounted on the boom or arm.
Additional lighting for access and service points.

High-quality M-LED work lights provide optimal illumination of the immediate working area, making operations safer and more comfortable.

Choose lighting based on the application

The best lighting is not always the lamp with the highest light output. What matters is that the light reaches the area where you actually need it.
A LED light bar can be an excellent choice for vehicles that need long-range visibility. For an excavator, loader or other work machine, a properly positioned LED work light is often far more effective.
By considering the task, the working area and the desired light distribution in advance, you can avoid disappointment and get the maximum performance from your lighting setup.
