Considerations when choosing rear lights

Mandatory lighting for trailers
Every trailer needs tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, licence plate lights and red reflectors. Depending on the weight, construction date and length of the trailer, additional lighting may be required, such as rear fog light, reversing light, clearance lamps and marker lights. Determine which lights you need.

Reflective triangle
Every trailer must have two reflective triangles on the rear. This makes the trailer stand out even when the lights are off. This can be a separate triangle or a rear light in which the triangle is already incorporated.

Position of the rear light
Not all lights can be used on both left and right sides. For example, a dynamic indicator light must be on the proper side for the best effect. A fog light is usually on the left, while a reversing light is placed on the right.

Lamp functions
Several functions are combined in a lamp.
3 functions: rear light + brake light + indicator. This is standard.
4 functions: standard functions + licence plate lighting
5 functions: standard functions + licence plate lighting + fog light
To meet the legal requirements, a rear light with 3 functions still requires separate licence plate lighting.

What do I need when connecting a rear light?

Before you get started, check whether your car has a 7-pin or 13-pin connector for the trailer plug and what connection the lights have. This is important because it determines which cables and plugs are needed.
