LED headlights for tractors and agricultural machinery: what should you look out for?
Why choose LED headlights for a tractor or agricultural machine?
LED lighting is widely used on tractors and other agricultural machines. An LED headlight can combine several functions in a single housing, such as low beam, high beam, position light and an indicator. This makes LED headlights an attractive option when existing headlight units need replacing or when you want to give your machine’s lighting a more modern appearance.
A good LED headlight should first and foremost be suitable for its intended application. A tractor that regularly travels on public roads has different lighting requirements from a machine that is mainly used around the farmyard or in the field.
What is the difference between a headlight and a work light?
A headlight and a work light do not serve the same purpose.
A headlight is designed to illuminate the road in front of the vehicle while driving. Depending on the model, a headlight may include functions such as low beam and high beam. Some complete LED headlight units also combine these with position lights and indicators.
A work light is designed to illuminate a working area. This may include the area beside or behind a tractor, around an implement, or during work in the field.
A powerful LED work light is therefore not automatically suitable as a replacement for a headlight. For lighting used while driving, it is important to consider the required lamp functions, the beam pattern and the applicable approvals. This information is, of course, provided on the product pages of our website.

Which functions do you need?
Not every LED headlight offers the same functions. First check which functions the current headlight on your tractor or agricultural machine has and which of these you want to retain.
A headlight unit may include, for example:
- low beam;
- high beam;
- position light;
- indicator;
- daytime running light;
- heating.
A complete unit can be convenient if you want to combine several functions in a single housing.
The M-LED HI-LO (KL134/KL135) headlights, for example, combine low beam, high beam, position light and an indicator. The Heavy Duty headlight set (KL112) also features daytime running lights and an automatic heating function.
So do not only check whether a headlight physically fits your machine, but also whether its functions match your requirements.
Check the E-mark approval
If you want to use an LED headlight as official vehicle lighting, approval is an important consideration. A powerful LED lamp is not automatically suitable for use as a low beam or high beam. Always check which functions the specific headlight is approved for. All functions and approvals are listed in the product specifications.
Pay attention to the beam pattern, not just the light output
With work lights, the number of lumens is often an important consideration. With a headlight, however, this is not the only factor that matters.
For good visibility while driving, it is especially important where the light is directed. Low beam should illuminate the road effectively. High beam is designed to provide greater visibility further ahead when there is no oncoming traffic, of course. You do not want to dazzle other road users. The beam pattern of a headlight is therefore more important than simply choosing the lamp with the highest light output.
After installation, the headlight must also be correctly adjusted. Even a suitable headlight unit can provide poor visibility or cause glare for other road users if it is incorrectly aligned.
Check whether the headlight fits your machine
Dimensions are also an important consideration when replacing tractor lighting. Especially if you want to replace an existing halogen headlight unit with LED, you should check in advance whether the new unit can be installed in the available space. Check, among other things:
- the width and height of the headlight;
- installation depth;
- the position and type of mounting bracket;
- the available space around the light;
- left-hand or right-hand version;
- the position of the electrical connection.
MobiLED offers both universal headlight units and headlights for specific applications and machines. Carefully measure the existing installation and compare these measurements with the product specifications before ordering.
Check the voltage and electrical connection
A new LED headlight must also be electrically compatible with the machine. Check the onboard voltage and make sure the selected headlight is suitable for it. Most LED headlights available from MobiLED are multivoltage and are therefore suitable for both 12-volt and 24-volt systems.
The connection is also important. A plug connection can make installation easier, but only if it matches the existing wiring or if you can adapt the connection correctly. The M-LED HI-LO headlights, for example, have an integrated DT connector. The Heavy Duty headlight set is supplied with a 6-pin Deutsch connector and approximately 40 centimetres of cable.
Always check the wiring diagram for the specific headlight before installation. Do not rely solely on the colours of the existing wiring.
Take dust, water and harsh conditions into account
Agricultural machinery is generally exposed to harsher conditions than a vehicle that only travels on paved roads. This includes dust, mud, rain, vibrations and frequent cleaning. When choosing an LED headlight, it is therefore also advisable to consider the mounting method and the stated protection rating.
The KL108/KL109 headlight set has been specifically developed for use in demanding conditions, such as on excavators and trucks. It features, for example, a cast aluminium housing that prevents dust from entering and is certified to ECE R6, R10, R87 and R112.
When choosing a headlight, therefore, look beyond its appearance and light output. The environment in which the machine is used every day is just as important.

Frequently asked questions about LED headlights for tractors
Can I replace my tractor’s halogen headlights with LED headlights?
es, but first check whether the complete LED headlight unit is suitable for the machine and the intended function. Pay attention to dimensions, connections, onboard voltage, beam pattern and approval, among other things. Simply replacing a halogen bulb with a random LED light source is different from replacing the complete headlight unit.
Which LED headlight do I need for my tractor
That depends on the existing headlight, the tractor model and the functions you need. At a minimum, check the dimensions, mounting method, onboard voltage, connection, low- and high-beam functions and the relevant approvals.
Which is better on a tractor: an LED headlight or an LED work light?
They serve different purposes. A headlight is intended for lighting while driving, whereas a work light illuminates the working area around the tractor or machine. To ensure that an agricultural machine is properly illuminated, both types of lighting may be required.
Do I need a left-hand and right-hand headlight?
That depends on the type of headlight. Some models are universal, while others are available in separate left-hand and right-hand versions. The M-LED HI-LO headlights, for example, are available separately as a left-hand and right-hand version.
Does an LED headlight need an E-mark approval?
When used as vehicle lighting on public roads, you must take the applicable installation and approval requirements into account. Therefore, do not only check whether the light has an E-mark, but also which lighting function it is approved for and whether it is correctly installed and used on your vehicle.
What should I pay particular attention to when buying LED headlights for an agricultural machine?
Pay particular attention to the required lighting functions, beam pattern, approval, onboard voltage, connection, dimensions, mounting method and suitability for the conditions in which the machine is used.
Prepare your tractor for the darker months
At the end of summer, the days quickly become shorter. This is a good time to check the lighting on your tractor or agricultural machine. Do not only check whether all lights are still working, but also inspect the housings, connections, mounting and alignment.
Do your existing headlights need replacing? Take a look at our LED headlights and, when making your choice, pay particular attention to the intended application and the functions you require.
